During their time as a band, the English rockers have experimented with glossy pop, anarcho-punk, gritty garage rock, electro-funk and country, with content covering topics such as self-discovery, nihilism, climate change, mental health, addiction, postmodernism and cybersex. So what's a band to do when they've seemingly experienced it all?
After 20 years together, The 1975 decided it was time to return to form - to celebrate their beginnings and show their evolution. The result is their fifth album, Being Funny in a Foreign Language - perhaps the band's most intimate album to date.
While The 1975's last few records have been bursting with massive production, programming and synthesizers, "Being Funny" is rooted in performance and, as a result, a departure from the maximalism of their last record, "Notes on a Conditional Form."
Recorded at Real World Studios in England and the famed Electric Lady Studios in New York, the album describes the first time The 1975 sat in a room and played as a band. This time, they set some ground rules: they wanted everything to sound as organic as possible, opting for more strings and fewer synthesizers.
But the band didn't change everything. Like the last four albums, "Being Funny" begins with the familiar but always nuanced intro from The 1975. Flanked by two glittering pianos playing off the beat, the revamped opener serves as a stream of consciousness that leads into a tense, beautiful drone.
