Baz Luhrmann’s Genre-Defying Blockbuster Returns 30 Years Later as a Live-to-Film Event!

The film will be shown in English with German subtitles.

The tour will make a stop at Wiener Stadthalle on November 4, 2027, for a single performance. Oscar® winner Leonardo DiCaprio and Emmy® winner Claire Danes star as Romeo and Juliet in this exhilarating reinterpretation that made the story feel dangerous and romantic for a new generation and continues to influence fashion, music, and culture to this day.

William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet Film in Concert will be screened on a large cinema screen, with the original dialogue and storyline remaining unchanged. A hybrid ensemble will perform the film’s score live and in sync with the entire movie. By bringing together rock and orchestral musicians with vocals, electronics, and a DJ, the ensemble embodies Luhrmann’s signature fusion of classical storytelling and contemporary sound.

Romeo + Juliet, which was originally released in cinemas on November 1, 1996, and debuted at number one at the U.S. box office, defined the style of Luhrmann’s work and transformed Shakespeare’s tragedy into an exuberant pop opera of the MTV era that still feels remarkably relevant three decades later. The film’s unmistakable 1990s musical identity played a major role in cementing its status as a defining classic for a generation, featuring instantly recognizable songs such as “Kissing You” by Des’ree, “Lovefool” by The Cardigans, “Talk Show Host” by Radiohead, “#1 Crush” by Garbage, “Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good)” by Quindon Tarver, “Young Hearts Run Free” by Kym Mazelle, and “You and Me Song” by The Wannadies.
