TicketsA glance at the Guinness Book of Records might suggest that Smokie’s success story was mainly a phenomenon of the 1970s. After all, 11 of their 14 UK hits were released during that remarkable decade. However, their immense success extended worldwide—to Scandinavia, South Africa, Germany, and even China. Smokie is a band that has played sold-out tours and earned platinum records across four decades—the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and beyond.
A brief look back at their success: Smokie came together in the late 1960s at a school in Yorkshire. After several name and style changes, they signed with Micky Most’s then-popular RAK label and quickly climbed the charts. Songs like “If You Think You Know How To Love Me,” “Don't Play Your Rock 'n' Roll To Me,” “It's Your Life,” and “Oh Carol” (all Top 10 hits) became radio staples and paved the way for worldwide tours.
Their sound combined catchy lyrics with Smokie’s distinctive yet unmistakably American-inspired soft rock harmonies. Their secret lay in their unique vocal style—a raw, emotional lead voice contrasted with melodic harmonies, creating a bittersweet sound.
After selling over 30 million records worldwide, they recorded the album “Wild Horses” in Nashville in 1997, with production costs reaching a quarter of a million pounds. This helped establish them in U.S. country radio, and their compilation albums continue to find an audience. This trend continued with “Uncovered” and “Uncovered Too,” which became major successes in Scandinavia, reaching the Top 5 in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden and earning double platinum status.
Smokie remains one of the world’s most successful bands. Recent global events, along with the sad news of Terry Uttley’s departure, have led to changes in the band’s lineup. With Pete Lincoln, former member of The Sweet, as lead singer and rhythm guitarist, and Luke Bullard—son of Martin Bullard—replacing Terry on bass and backing vocals, Smokie’s legacy will continue, and the band looks forward to connecting with audiences on the next chapter of their journey.
