The Success Story
It is perhaps the greatest love story of all time – and it celebrated a triumphant success as a musical in Vienna. Now, 20 years later, Romeo & Juliet finally returns to Vienna in a staged concert version! “ROMEO AND JULIET – The Musical” is the first musical production by Gérard Presgurvic, based on the original story by William Shakespeare. Following its world premiere on January 19, 2001, at the Palais de Congrès in Paris, it became the musical sensation of France and went on to conquer the world, with over 11 million spectators to date. From Paris, the production toured throughout France and then internationally — including Canada, the UK, Scandinavia, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Hungary, Russia, the Philippines, Japan, China, and, in 2005, its German-language premiere in Vienna.
Back in Vienna After 20 Years – The Cast
The acclaimed original lead performers Marjan Shaki and Lukas Perman are the driving forces behind the 2026 revival, bringing the hit musical back to the stage in a staged concert version on November 13 & 14, 2026, at the Wiener Stadthalle, Hall F. Joining them are beloved cast members from the 2005/06 production — including Carin Filipčić (The Nurse), Mark Seibert (Tybalt), Mathias Edenborn (Benvolio), Peter Lesiak (Mercutio), and Norman Stehr (The Prince) — along with a lineup of new artists in additional roles.
The role of Romeo will be performed by rising star Lukas Mayer (e.g. “Death” in Elisabeth), while the enchanting Amelie Sarich makes her debut as Juliet. Additional highlights include musical stars Annemieke van Dam and André Bauer as Lady and Lord Capulet.
The original title performers, Marjan Shaki and Lukas Perman, now return in new capacities as initiators, producers, organizers, and artistic directors of the production.
Marjan Shaki: “Some roles are timeless and can be played at any age. Romeo & Juliet represent first, innocent, and devoted love… At 45, with 20 years of shared history as my Romeo and four children together, we now want to entrust this task to young and fresh talents, allowing the audience to experience this unique love story authentically.”
Lukas Perman:“You always have to know when the right time has come for something. For us, now is the perfect time to revive this wonderful French musical in Vienna — with the orchestration and German translation of 2005/2006 — but in a different role: as organizers and producers.”
Romeo & Juliet 2026 – Magical Music and Sand Art
Following its massive success in France, Romeo & Juliet premiered in German in February 2005 at Vienna’s Raimund Theater, where it remained sold out until June 2006. The cast album achieved Gold status, and the single “Your Eyes Are My River (Liebe),” performed by Marjan Shaki & Lukas Perman, reached #3 on the Austrian charts and received an Amadeus Award nomination. Songs such as “Herrscher der Welt,” “Siehe da sie liebt,” “Habt ihr schon gehört,” and “Liebe” have since become well-known hits from this Franco-pop musical masterpiece. The 20th-anniversary staged concert version at Wiener Stadthalle will feature the complete music of the Vienna 2005/06 version, performed in German with arrangements by Christian Kolonovits and translation by Michaela Ronzoni. The story of Romeo & Juliet will also be brought to life visually through the breathtaking sand art of Irina Titova – The Queen of Sand, who will perform live during the show.
